Supported File Types

Kahua supports many file types so that these files can be viewed and marked up within Kahua, even if the native application is not installed on the user's local machine. File types not mentioned here may be uploaded for storage but not viewing or markups. This includes the HEIC file format, the default image format used by Apple devices. Note The maximum file size upload limit for all apps is 10GB. You will be warned if you attempt to upload a file that exceeds the maximum file size.

The following common file types are supported for upload, viewing, and markups:

  • Microsoft Word (docx, docm, doc)

  • Microsoft Excel (xlsx, xlsm, xls)

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (pptx, pptm, ppt)

  • Microsoft Project (mpp)

  • Microsoft Visio (vsd, vsdx, vsdm)

  • Text (txt)

  • Rich Text Format (rtf)

  • Image Formats (png, bmp, jpg, jpeg, tif, tiff, gif)

  • 2D CAD Formats (dwg, dwf, dwfx, dxf)

  • Adobe Acrobat (pdf)

Some less-common extensions also supported for upload, viewing, and markups include:

In addition to viewing files, Kahua also supports the streaming of some of the more common audio and video formats:

  • Audio formats: MP3, M4A and WAV, as well as several high-fidelity formats (FLAC, AAC, OGA, and OGG)

  • Video formats: MP4, MOV, and WEBM

Kahua clients who have purchased Kahua’s Model Viewing & Markup license also have the ability to view and markup 3D files and models. Supported formats include:

  • Autodesk Revit (rvt)

  • Autodesk Navisworks (nwd)

  • Industry Foundation Class (ifc)

  • Trimble Sketchup (skp)

For security reasons, potentially malicious file types are blocked from being uploaded into Kahua.

In addition to restricting the file types listed below from being uploaded directly into Kahua, zip files containing any of the restricted file types will also be blocked from being uploaded into Kahua.

The following file extensions cannot be uploaded to Kahua:

asp, bat, com, css, dll, dmg, exe, jar, js, jsp, htm, html, php, php3, ps1, swf, vba, vbs, vbx, xlm, xlv
