Asset Definition Overview
The Asset Definition application is where you set up information for the assets you want to track in your domain.
It contains sub-applications that allow you to define asset attributes, asset classes and groups of asset classes for use throughout your domain, and define the asset classes that you will use in individual projects.
In order to track assets on a project, you must first complete the following set-up steps:
Attributes are the characteristics of assets that you want to track. Some asset attributes are used on a wide variety of assets, such as "Model Number" or "Serial Number". Other attributes are specific to a particular type of asset, such as the "Cooling Capacity" for an HVAC unit for example.
The Asset Definition > Attributes sub-application is the domain-level app used to define the attribute fields you want to track on assets. All the attributes for all the different asset types you will be tracking are set up here.
Each attribute is assigned a name and a data type. If appropriate, you can assign it a unit type and default unit value or create a lookup list of values users can select from. For more information, refer to Attributes.
Asset Classes represent the assets that you want to track for projects in your domain which have a common set of attributes. This includes attributes that a group of these items have in common, such as the model number or capacity, and attributes unique to a single item in the asset class, such as the serial number or installation date.
The Asset Definition > Classes - Master sub-application app is the domain-level app where you define and manage the asset classes that you will be tracking in your domain. Additionally, if enabled, you can create a list of required submittals for the asset class.
You must first create asset classes in the Classes - Master app for them to be available for use in projects. For more information, refer to Classes - Master.
The Asset Definition > Classes-Template sub-application is where you group asset classes from the Classes - Master sub-application together so they can be selected for different types of projects.
This step is optional, but it can make it easier to add asset classes to projects, particularly if you are using a large number of asset classes in your projects. Depending on your business, you may group assets together by project type. For more information, refer to Classes - Template.
The Asset Definition > Classes-Project sub-application is a project-specific application that allows you to select which asset classes are available for use on your project. They can be added one at a time, or as a group by selecting a template from the Classes - Template sub-application. For more information, refer to Classes - Project.
